“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Members of Acceleration Partners’ Philadelphia hub recently gathered together to volunteer with New Bethany Ministries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at their Transitional Housing Program.
The New Bethany Ministries Transitional Housing Program is one of the very few programs in the Lehigh Valley that focuses on keeping families together while they work with a Case Manager on action steps to help move them towards self-sufficiency.
Families are reviewed after three months in the program and can earn an additional three-month stay with positive action steps towards a more secure future. Over the course of 2016, 34 families were in the program – 48 adults and 76 children – and the organization provided over 13,000 nights of shelter to families working towards self-sufficiency.
During our time at New Bethany, we received a tour of the facilities, including their community gardens, food pantry, meal center and transitional housing. After the tour, the AP team rolled up their sleeves, grabbed cleaning supplies and scrubbed the communal areas, kitchens and bathrooms. We organized books for children, cleaned dishes and helped create a fresh environment for current and future tenants.
In addition to volunteering at New Bethany Ministries, the AP team also donated canned goods, personal care items and cleaning supplies to their fund.
It was a humbling experience to be able to support a program that creates a path of light and hope for families. Being able to provide a clean place for the families to call home for the next few months was an honor and privilege.
We are so thankful to the New Bethany Ministries team for all they do to support families and individuals in our community and for letting us be a part of their mission.
New Bethany Ministries relies on the support of its volunteers, donations and the generosity of their community. If you would like to support this wonderful organization, we encourage you to view their list of most needed items or volunteer a few hours if you are in the Lehigh Valley area.
