3 AP Operating Principles Found in NBA Championship Teams

The NBA Playoffs are upon us. For the third year in a row, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are favored to meet in the NBA Finals. This got me thinking about other teams who’ve played in and won multiple championships. Turns out, in the past two decades, only four NBA teams have done so: The Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and San Antonio Spurs. What is it that makes these teams so successful year after year?

Each of these winning teams have similar qualities that set them apart — three in particular are part of our Operating Principles here at Acceleration Partners. Let’s look at how these three qualities make us successful and where you’ll see them in NBA championship teams.

1. Enjoy Competing

At Acceleration Partners, we’re constantly competing for clients, partners, and even talent within the company. We fully embrace the challenge and believe it allows us to reach our full potential.

Likewise, winning an NBA championship is not an easy feat. After a grueling eighty-two game schedule, a championship team must then win sixteen intense playoff games to raise the championship banner. In the playoffs, elite players elevate their game even higher, so every night they’re playing against the best, at their best. Without enjoying that level of competition, it’s unlikely that they’d make it far in the playoffs, much less win the championship.

2. Keep Moving Forward

At Acceleration Partners we reflect on our failures, adjust, and move forward without wondering what might have been. We celebrate successes as well, but stay humble and always look forward to the next challenge.

Moving forward is key to becoming a NBA championship team. Unlike the NCAA basketball tournament where a team is done after losing a game, when a game is lost in the NBA playoffs, the team’s chances of moving on are still alive. The format of the playoffs has teams playing one another at least four straight times, up to as many as seven games, before moving to the next round. Winning teams have to forget their losses, learn what they can do better, and get ready for the next game, because the opportunity to win the series is still within their grasp.

3. Be Resilient

At AP, we have a fierce resolve in everything we do, demonstrating determination, resilience and tenacity. We use mistakes and problems as opportunities to get better, not to quit. We believe in no whining and no excuses.

Determination, resilience, and tenacity and all qualities of an NBA championship team. These qualities need to come from everyone on the team, including the starting five, the bench players, and coaches. Without these qualities, winning even a playoff series –let alone a championship– would be impossible. NBA championship teams are constantly reviewing game film to see what they did wrong, and where they can improve next time. This resilience and seeing mistakes as opportunities helps them perform better, make proper adjustments, and ultimately leads to hoisting a championship banner.
